Here is a brief on the history of Nokia mobile phones. The name Nokia actually came from a namesake town in Finland, where Mr. Frederik Idestam, an engineer, had a manufacturing business of papers. This was around the year 1865 and mobile phones were still a mermaid in the dreams. The second time, the company opened up to transformation, it became a share company with Leo Mechelin as its head. This is when the company was named ‘Nokia’. From the year 1865 to 1967, the company evolved into a major industrial name.

Around the year 1967, the company merged with a cable company and thus started manufacturing a string of products like

- personal computers,
- electric generating machineries and
- Military equipments.
After this, the company became Nokia Corporation.

At around the 1990s the renowned company decided to call the manufacturing of consumer electronic devices off. Therefore, the company Nokia Tires, split from the bigger brother, Nokia Corporation and maintained a different company (after 1988). In 1990, another Nokia company was founded, named Nokian footwear. This company focused on manufacturing rubber boots.

In the year 1992, the company decided to focus mainly on manufacturing telecommunications. This is where the history of the modern day Nokia starts. Though the company had been manufacturing networking instruments since 1970s – 80s, it had been developing radio communication devices for the military and some commercial purposes.

In the year 1966, the two companies of Nokia and Salora joined hands to start developing car radiophones. It was released in 1971 and started giving full coverage from the year 1978. After this, a lot of stuff happened to give the mobile making goal of the company enough pushes. The weight of the first phones started decreasing gradually.

Now, the telecom giant was getting famous worldwide. However, even before this, Nokia was one of the few key developers for the GSM services. In 1991, Nokia’s telecommunication equipments were used to make the world’s first GSM call.
A new Era
With the onset of GSM services, in 1998, Nokia had become the spearhead of the entire telecommunication product-manufacturing world. In 1999, Nokia launched it’s (and the world’s) first WAP enabled handset. The set was Nokia 7110. The internet was now within the grasp of people, without accessing the computers.

The world has moved on from bar phones, which weighted around 10 kilos and were as thick as bricks, to sleek, shiny and ultra-thin smart phones. In this age, Nokia’s mobile phones can do almost every little data related job needed by a human. From phone calls to short message service (sms), from playing loud music to downloading music from its partner site Ovi. Some phones, like the Nokia N8 can also have access to a USB device. So, you know now that Nokia is still reigning and developing largely, on their telecommunication products.
